Great Pond is the body of water that is contiguous with Coonamessett River and spills out into the sea. More specifically, it is an estuary abutting Vineyard Sound. The Town of Falmouth has a considerable number of estuaries, where river and sea waters--as well as characteristics of both--mix.

Due to the high number of residences around Falmouth's estuaries, nitrogen seeps from each septic system through the sandy Cape Cod soil into these bodies of brackish water. Recent years have seen algal blooms which endanger the usual life found in the estuaries. In spite of Great Pond's affliction of algal blooms due to nitrogen loading, the recording is lively with a combination of critter sounds and stagnant boats creaking and scraping against their moorings.

The recordings have only been truncated at either end if needed. Some of the sounds which are like knocking are likely critters--like wee hermit crabs I saw in the area--tapping the hydrophone cable, which in this instance can act very much like a contact microphone.
