I used to play in this spot when I was a kid. We'd call it "going down to the creek", and it was always a source of delight for me to explore the river's banks and go as far downstream as I could without risking getting wet. This is the second release in the Coonamessett River hydrophone sound mapping project, and documents the sounds approaching the weir in the river, many spots within the weir, and the creek after the weir. The recordings were made August and September 2016. While the bogs were producing cranberries, the weir would be used to flood the bogs for harvest, as well as protect the plants in winter.

As I type this the work to remove the lower bog weir and revert the lower bog itself to wetland is underway. The end goal of this is to make passage upstream more friendly to the herring and trout which used to be far more numerous along the river, and will include giving the river more turns and deep areas. The weir itself will be replaced by a riffle, which will have its own sonic characteristics. I hope to return when this is done and document them as well.
